Hardware Overview

SD Card

VBOX Touch logs data via an SD card. Dependent on the Logging Strategy selected within the General Settings area, the unit will either log continuously or when movement is detected (default). More information on this is available here.

Antenna

VBOX Touch has an internal patch antenna, meaning that in many circumstances where the unit has a clear view of the sky without any interference, an additional antenna is not required. However, if you are struggling to maintain a stable satellite lock, the supplied external antenna (RLACS262) can be connected to the antenna socket. The external antenna should also be used when conducting a Brake Trigger Test. More information on the external antenna is available here.

D IN/PPS

The Digital In and PPS port can be used for connection to the VBOX Brake Pedal Trigger to provide brake trigger deceleration tests. More information on this is available here.

The port can also be used to connect a Hand Held Start/Stop Logging Switch (RLVBACS010) to control the logging of the unit. More information on this is available here.

CAN/Serial (Top)

Reserved for future use.

CAN/Serial (Bottom)

The bottom CAN/Serial port can be used by VBOX Touch RTK units to receive RTK corrections via an NTRIP Modem or a Telemetry Modem with a Static Base Station.

Power

The VBOX Touch unit is either powered by the supplied RLCAB010LE cable (RLVBTOUCH) which is inserted in to a vehicle's 12 V cigar power socket, or by the RLCAB014LE cable (RLVBTOUCH-M) which is unterminated for making a bare wire connection to a power supply. More information on this is available here.

SD Card

VBOX Touch logs data via an SD card inserted in to the Left Side of the Unit. The unit is supplied with an 8 GB SDHC card in a FAT32 file format, which is the only file format supported. If you are looking to purchase a new SD card, it is recommended that any card used has a write speed of above 7 MB/s (4 MB/s absolute minimum) and a speed class of 10 (4 absolute minimum). Racelogic recommend SD cards from quality brands such as Transcend, SanDisk, Kingston or Lexar to ensure best results.

IMPORTANT – If an SD card is formatted in the exFAT or NTFS file formats, it will need to be reformatted into a FAT32 file system before it will work with a VBOX Touch unit. More information on this can be found here.

Setup

  1. VBOX Touch has an internal patch antenna, meaning that in many circumstances, where the unit has a clear view of the sky without any interference, an additional antenna is not required.

However, if required, mount the supplied external GNSS antenna in the centre of the roof of the vehicle, away from roof bars and other antennas. For more information on antenna mounting positions click here.

Note: The external antenna should be used If you are receiving NTRIP RTK corrections with a VBOX Touch RTK unit.

  1. If you have a VBOX Touch RTK unit and are intending to use RTK corrections, either Enable NTRIP Mode if you are using an NTRIP Modem or leave Disabled if you are using a Static Base Station. Choose the required Baud Rate within the Receiver Settings, and if required, change the 3rd tracked constellation between Beidou and Glonass.

Ensure that the NTRIP Modem or Static Base Station is connected/configured correctly.

Note: The external antenna should be used If you are receiving RTK corrections with a VBOX Touch RTK unit.

  1. Press the Exit Button Exit Screen.png to return to the Accel Test screen.

  2. Take the vehicle outside and wait for the VBOX Touch to gain satellite lock. The Satellite Icon should display as solid green VBOX Touch Sats Lock.png solid orange VBOX Touch Sats Lock RTK Float.png or solid purple VBOX Touch Sats Lock RTK Fix.png depending on whether you have a VBOX Touch RTK unit.

Note: The first time that the unit is used, it may take up to 10 – 15 minutes to fully acquire satellites. After this, it will usually take 1 – 2 minutes to acquire satellites.

  3. The unit is now ready to display live Accel Test results.

  4. By default, VBOX Touch will automatically start recording when travelling over 0.5 km/h, this can be changed within the General Settings.

  5. Tapping on the SD Card Icon when green VBOX Touch SD OK.png will manually start or stop logging data, overriding the Configured Logging Strategy.

  6. The Record Icon VBOX Touch Recording Button.png will show when the unit is logging data to the SD card.

If you have come to a stop, but the Record Icon is still on, press the SD Card Icon to stop the logging before removing the card.

Sometimes, due to poor satellite visibility in a garage or close to a building, the box may start recording, even if the car is stationary. Always check the Record Icon before ejecting the card.

IMPORTANT – The SD card shouldn't be removed when the Record Icon is on as you may lose data.

Note: If for some reason the SD card is removed whilst still recording, it may need to be repaired using a PC before it can be reused.

  7. A screenshot of what is displayed on the screen can be taken at any time by pressing the Screenshot Button  Screenshot.png.

  8. To reset all test results shown on the current screen, press the Reset Button Reset.png.

  9. When you have finished your testing, completed test results can be viewed by pressing the Results Button Results.png.
