01 - VPRS Introduction

Overview

The VBOX Precision Ranging System enables you to accurately measure the distance between two objects, in any environment. It is suitable for any application where you need to calculate a separation distance and does not rely on GPS, which means the system can also be used indoors.

It consists of a receiver (rover) and a beacon, which communicate using Ultra Wideband. The rover is placed on one of the objects, the beacon is placed on the second object and the distance between each is then calculated by the rover to an accuracy of up to 2 cm. There is no need to survey the position of either device, install any site control system or perform complex setup routines. Up to 5 systems can be used simultaneously and can be easily configured using the free VBOX Precision Ranging System Setup Software.

The beacon and rover are configured as a pair to allow the range between them to be output as a CAN or Serial Message from the Rover unit only. The Rover unit can connect to a standard VBOX 3i via CAN or a 3rd Party Logger. This means that in an ADAS application, the units could be roof mounted and the range data can be logged from both the ADAS link and the VPRS simultaneously, which might be useful with open road testing in tunnels or GNSS obstructed areas.

When shipped from Racelogic, the VPRS will be preconfigured to work as a pair and will output range data via CAN and Serial. Therefore, configuration is only necessary if there are multiple VPRS within 100 m of each other in order to prevent interference between the systems.

LED Behaviour

The LED on the front of the Beacon and Rover units provides a visual status indication.

Beacon
