Pirelli Tyre Wear App

flag-it.png

VBOX Touch Pirelli Distance Screen Small.png

The Pirelli Tyre Wear Application is used to capture Distance, Speed and 3-axis accelerometer data from a complete test shift, so that it can be analysed when reviewing tyre degradation.

The product includes the ability to calculate a Wet Distance - a separate distance travelled data channel that will accumulate when the user has determined the road surface to be wet, or have diminished traction.

It also includes the ability to continue a shift across unit power cycles, appending new data to the same shift file.

IMPORTANT - The application is only compatible with VBOX Touch RTK IMU hardware!

Instructions on how to install can be found here.

Introduction

As the VBOX Touch RTK IMU contains an internal GNSS antenna and utilises on board inertial sensors, it is necessary for it to be mounted in a suitable location.

IMPORTANT - The quality of the data obtained is directly related to the correct mounting of the unit. To ensure correct alignment of the internal 3-axis accelerometer, the unit should be mounted upright, square to the direction of travel, with the screen facing inwards to the cabin.

If NTRIP RTK positional corrections are being utilised, it is recommended to use the supplied external antenna (RLACS262).

Power, mounting and antenna information is available here.

Getting Started

When the unit is powered, you will be prompted to either continue a shift or start a new shift. If the correct hardware is not detected, an incorrect hardware screen will appear, the LEDs will appear solid red and you will be prevented from using the application.

Starting a Shift

When there is no active shift detected, you will be prompted to start creating a new shift by entering a three character Driver ID using the presented keypad.

VBOX Touch Pirelli Driver ID2.png

Once the Driver ID has been saved by pressing the Confirm Button Confirm Button.png , further Vehicle and Protocol information must be defined before a shift can start. Once you have exited the Settings menus and accessed the Distance Screen, the shift information will be finalised and the shift data file will open.

Notes:

  • The unit must have had a valid satellite lock before shift logging starts. This is to ensure the correct date is used.
  • An SD card must be installed within the unit before a shift can be started, a warning message will appear and an audible beep will sound if you try and exit the Settings menu without an SD card installled.
  • If you try and exit the Settings menu before all of the Shift Settings fields have been defined, a warning message will appear and an audible beep will sound, advising you what needs to be defined before a shift can start.

Continuing a Shift

The unit recalls the current active shift name and will search for a matching shift file (.vbo) located on the inserted SD card. If found, you will be prompted to either Continue Shift or Start New Shift. When the screen is presented, the LEDs will flash blue and an audible beep will sound.

VBOX Touch Pirelli Continue Shift.png
  • When Continue Shift is selected, the unit will access the active shift file and continue calculating distance from the last known distance measurements. All new logged data will append to the same file.

  • If no matching file is found, or there is no active shift, the unit will automatically start to create a new shift, prompting the user to enter a three character Driver ID.

IMPORTANT - Only one shift can be active at a time, if a new shift starts, any previous shift will be completed, preventing further data capture.

Ending a Shift

There are two standard methods to complete a shift and permanently close the data file.

Complete Shift Button

Once you have completed your shift, you can close the shift file by pressing Complete Shift from the Shift Settings screen. A confirmation screen will then show, referencing the current shift information and giving you the opportunity to cancel the complete shift action. The LEDs will flash blue when the screen is presented.

VBOX Touch Pirelli Close Shift.png
  • Pressing Confirm will close the active shift file and direct you back to the Enter Driver ID screen to start a new shift.

  • Selecting Cancel will keep the shift active and return to the Shift Settings screen.

Note: The Complete Shift button is greyed out if there is no active shift.

New Shift on Continue Screen

If an active shift file is found on the inserted SD card when the unit is powered, you can decide to close the shift from the Open Shift File Detected screen. When the screen is presented, the LEDs will flash blue and an audible beep will sound.

VBOX Touch Pirelli Start New Shift.png
  • Pressing Start New Shift will close the active shift file and direct you back to the Enter Driver ID screen to start a new shift.

This menu contains logging mode, receiver settings and brightness options.

VBOX Touch Pirelli General Settings.png

  • Log Mode: Allows you to toggle between 2 logging modes, tap the button to change the mode:
    • Continuous (default): The VBOX Touch will start logging as soon as an SD card is inserted, has been initialised and a shift has been started by accessing the main screen (i.e. Distance Screen or Accelerometer Screen). Logging will stop once a shift has been completed.
    • Moving: The VBOX Touch will start logging as soon as an SD card is inserted, has been initialised, a shift has been started by accessing the main screen (i.e. Distance Screen or Accelerometer Screen) and a speed over 0.5 km/h is detected. Logging will stop once a shift has been completed. Logging will pause when speed is less than 0.5 km/h for 3 seconds, and will then recommence recording once speed is greater than 0.5 km/h, appending the same file. If a satellite dropout is detected, the last detected speed value will be used to movement.

Note: If an existing shift is detected, data is appended to the existing data file.
  • Receiver Settings: Allows you to enable NTRIP correction messages and control the DGPS baud rate.
    • NTRIP Mode: Enable or disable NTRIP correction messages; a subscription based internet protocol providing DGPS correction data via a modem. More information on this can be found here. When enabled, the unit will periodically output its current position from the 5-pin CAN / SERIAL Lemo situated next to the 2-pin power input for use with NTRIP modems. The output will be a GGA NMEA format serial message, output at the defined DGPS baud rate. 'Disabled' by default.
    • DGPS Rate: Control the DGPS serial baud rate, selectable as 38400 kbit/s or 115200 kbit/s. '38400' by default.
  • Screen Brightness: You can manually adjust the screen brightness for Day / Night Modes between 5 levels, with 1 being the dimmest and 5 being the brightest setting. An 'Auto' setting is also available which uses the internal ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the screen brightness. In dark conditions, the screen brightness will dim, and in light conditions the screen will brighten. Tap the buttons to cycle through the available options. The Day Mode default value is 'Auto' and the Night Mode default value is '1'.
  • LED Brightness: You can manually adjust the LED brightness for Day / Night Modes between 5 levels, with 1 being the dimmest and 5 being the brightest setting (this is extremely bright!) or turn off the LEDs. Tap the buttons to cycle through the available options, the LEDs will preview the brightness level. The Day Mode default value is 'Auto' and the Night Mode default value is '1'.

Diagnostics

The Diagnostics menu is the final screen within the Settings menu, it displays basic GPS receiver and VBOX information.

VBOX Touch Pirelli Diagnostics.png

The satellite icon at the top of the screen is the quickest way to determine if the unit has a valid satellite lock. When lock is acquired, it will display as solid green VBOX Touch Sats Lock.png.  When there is no satellite lock, the icon will flash red VBOX Touch No Sats.png.

GPS Information
  • Cold Start: Press this button to perform a cold start on the VBOX Touch. This means the receiver will clear any data currently stored within its internal memory. It may be required to do this when the GPS engine has locked up or the VBOX Touch is struggling to acquire satellite lock.

When the button has been pressed, the unit will make an audible sound and a ‘PLEASE WAIT’ message will be displayed on the screen which will count down from 3. The number of satellites will then be displayed as '00' and GPS status will show ‘SEARCHING FOR SATELLITES’ until satellite lock has been acquired. It will take approximately 25 – 30 seconds for the unit to reacquire satellite lock.
  • Satellites: Displays how many satellites the receiver is currently using.
  • GPS Status: This indicates the current GPS lock/RTK status of the unit. When the unit is searching for a valid satellite lock, ‘SEARCHING FOR SATELLITES’ is displayed. When the GPS receiver has acquired satellite lock, one of the following will be displayed:
    • OK: Position computed from GNSS only.
    • RTK FLOAT: Position computed from GNSS corrected by RTK. Float means the GNSS receiver is still calculating the integer ambiguity, a small error will be present on the position computation at this time.
    • RTK FIXED: Position computed from GNSS corrected by RTK. Fixed means the integer ambiguity is established and the optimum position correction is applied resulting in sub 2 cm relative accuracy in good conditions.
VBOX Information

This section displays the device serial number, firmware version number and hardware version number. This information is useful in the event of troubleshooting a potential issue with the VBOX Touch device.

Logging

Logging is dependent on the Configured Logging Strategy and will stop once a shift has been Completed or the unit is power cycled. If a new shift is being started, logging will not start until the unit has a valid Satellite Lock. A shift contains date information and therefore a valid GPS time and date must be known by the unit before a shift file will open.

The Tyre Wear App will log a standard .vbo data file to the SD card containing all standard GPS parameters along with Solution Type, Shift Distance, Wet Distance, Rain Status and Accelerometer parameters. The saved '.vbo' file name will include shift information, enabling you to differentiate between recorded data files.

Format:
