Pass-By Noise Test - R51
The R51 Pass-By Noise test plugin for VBOX Test Suite gives you the ability to measure the Maximum Sound Pressure level of of motor vehicles having at least four wheels.
Ribbon - Test Setup
The R51 Pass-By Noise test has a unique Test Setup ribbon, from which you can configure the test.

*Measurements
The vehicle offsets measurements are mandatory. The other data is optional and will not affect the test or test result.
Enter the front and rear vehicle offsets from the laser light trigger, or GNSS antenna if using GPS start/finish lines.
The start of the test is deemed to be when the front of the vehicle passes the start line and the end is when the rear of the vehicle passes the finish line.

Test Settings
If you are creating a new test, the Settings window will open when you add the new test. This is where you can define the test parameters.
If you have already added an R51 Pass-By Noise test and it is open, you can click on the Configure button to open the Settings window to define or amend the test parameters.
Use the arrow buttons on the right-hand side of each parameter section to expand and collapse the section to view or hide the available settings.
Start Conditions
Start OnWith Laser Light Barrier: Select the channel Trigger in the dropdown menu. If you use a trigger as the start condition, the test will ignore any other trigger activations during the duration of the test. With RTK Solution:
Select the relevant in the dropdown menu. As the test can be conducted in both directions, you can set 1 or 2 Start On lines in this setting. Start Line Offset (m)Set the distance between the reflective strip and the Start Line (AA') in the test area. To prevent situations where the start line offset is less than the vehicle front offset to the antenna, the minimum value of the Start Line Offset (m) is 5 m. It is recommended that the reflective strip is located 30 m after the Start Line. Use the arrow buttons next to the value box to increase/decrease the value or type the required value directly into the box. End Line Offset (m)Set the distance between the reflective strip and the End Line (BB') in the test area. Use the arrow buttons next to the value box to increase/decrease the value or type the required value directly into the box. Test SpeedSet the speed of the test (50 km/h by default). Use the arrow buttons next to the value box to increase/decrease the value or type the required value directly into the box. |
Channels
Microphone 1Specify the channel with the input for Microphone 1.
Microphone 2Specify the channel with the input for Microphone 2.
RPMSpecify the channel with the engine speed input.
GearSpecify the channel with the gear input.

Temperature
Only when using a weather station, otherwise leave it blank.
ChannelSpecify the channel with the Air Temperature. If you select a channel, VBOX Test Suite will add a pass/fail column for Temperature in the results table to ensure that the ambient air temperature is within the specified range during each test. The default range is 5°C to 45°C.
Min (°C)Specify the minimum temperature in the acceptable temperature range for the test. Use the arrow buttons next to the value box to increase/decrease the value or type the required value directly into the box.
Max (°C)Specify the maximum temperature in the acceptable temperature range for the test. Use the arrow buttons next to the value box to increase/decrease the value or type the required value directly into the box. |
Wind Speed
Only when using a weather station, otherwise leave it blank.
ChannelSpecify the channel with the Wind Speed. If you select a channel, VBOX Test Suite will add a pass/fail column for Wind Speed in the results table to ensure that the wind speed, including gusts, doesn't exceed the maximum threshold at the height of the microphone during each test run. The default maximum is 5 m/s.
Max (m/s)Specify the required maximum wind speed for the test. Use the arrow buttons next to the value box to increase/decrease the value or type the required value directly into the box. |
Noise Threshold
Wide Open Throttle (dBA)Specify the maximum sound level for the Wide Open Throttle tests. Use the arrow buttons next to the value box to increase/decrease the value or type the required value directly into the box.
Steady Speed (dBA)Specify the maximum sound level for the Steady Speed tests. Use the arrow buttons next to the value box to increase/decrease the value or type the required value directly into the box. |

Result Columns
The Test Results area has the following default columns:
| Run | Indicates which run number the results relate to, with run one being the first run completed. There is also a selection box that, when ticked, includes the run in the graph and into the Average/Max/Min/Standard Deviation calculations. Once selected, a coloured square will appear to indicate which colour this run is displayed as on the graph.
|
|
| Time (s) | The total time the run has taken. | |
| Speed at Start (km/h) | The speed value at the start line AA’. | |
| Speed at Mid (km/h) | The speed value at the microphone line PP’. | |
| Speed at End (km/h) | The speed value at the finish line BB’. | |
| Accel AA' - BB' (g) | Average acceleration value between AA’ and BB’. | |
| Noise | Pass or Fail status when the Mic Max levels in the settings are compared to the set Noise Threshold value. | |
| Accel PP' - BB' (g) | Average acceleration value between PP’ (the microphone line) and BB’ (the end line). |
The software will automatically add columns based on any specified pass criteria.
