Power Supply 
Battery

LabSat 4 is shipped with a rechargeable, lithium-ion smart battery pack. A fully charged battery provides a unit operation time of a minimum of 1 hour. You can charge the battery by connecting an external power source to the Power port on LabSat 4. 

Notes:

  • For safety reasons, the battery will not be fully charged when shipped from us. We recommend that you charge it fully before use or connect LabSat 4 to external power the first time you use it.   
  • Take note of the expected operation time and make sure that you have access to an external power source (and the appropriate cable for it) if you think it will take more than 1 hour.  

 

WARNING

  • Never leave a system unattended during the charging or discharging of the battery pack.
  • The battery should be fully charged when stored.
    If a battery is left depleted for a prolonged period then it is likely that the performance of the battery will degrade and may be unusable.

External Power

You can apply power to LabSat 4 via mains power with the power supply (RLVBACS020) or from the vehicle via the cigar plug to power (RLCAB010LE) cable. When you power LabSat 4 from an external source, it will automatically charge the internal battery pack, and seamlessly switch to battery operation when the external power is removed.

Antenna

LabSat 4 comes supplied with a GNSS antenna with magnetic mounting (RLACS354). The antenna is an active device with approximately 37 dB of gain. LabSat 4 provides a 4 to 4.5 V DC bias for antenna power on the centre pin of the RF IN connector. You can also use third-party antennas, providing they are compatible with the 4 to 4.5 V bias. 

If you connect LabSat 4 to an antenna that requires a higher bias voltage (e.g. 12 V), you must supply the antenna bias and insert an appropriate DC block at the RF IN connector to avoid damaging LabSat 4. You can read more about using higher bias voltage antennas here.  

Media

LabSat 4 uses different media types for different operations:

Solid State Drive (SSD) 

LabSat 4 records scenario files to and replays scenario files from the internal SSD.

USB Storage Device

LabSat 4 has a Host USB port that you can use to connect a USB storage device.

This USB device can be used to record and replay scenario files and to transfer files to and from the internal SSD. 

Network Share

You can also connect to and use Network File Systems (NFS), such as Windows File Explorer to access and manage your files and high-speed Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices to replay from.  

SD Card

The 8 GB SD card that is included with LabSat 4 can be used for firmware upgrades and to transfer files to and from the internal SSD. You cannot use it to record/replay scenario files.
 

Note: To reduce the risk of any unwanted signal noise, you should remove the SD card from LabSat 4 when you are not performing a firmware update or transferring files. 
Web Server

LabSat 4 has a complex array of settings for both GNSS signal and external data recording. To simplify the configuration and device control process, LabSat 4 has an internal web server that you can easily access via Ethernet and a standard internet web browser.

GNSS Monitor

LabSat 4 features a multi-constellation GNSS receiver that you can use to monitor L1 band GNSS signals in the incoming RF signal during a recording or the outgoing RF signal during a replay. The USB device connector on the rear panel of LabSat 4 functions as a virtual serial connection and will output NMEA data from the GNSS monitor at 115,200 baud when it is recording or replaying.

In addition to this, you can press the OK button when the unit is recording or replaying to switch the display to show satellite tracking levels for GPS L1, GLONASS L1, Beidou B1 and Galileo E1 satellites. Press the Up and Down arrows while in this display will swap between constellations.

During recording, the primary aim of the GNSS monitor is to give an indication when an L1 band GNSS antenna is connected and working.

During replay, the GNSS monitor will listen to the RF output signal. If the replayed signal contains valid L1 GNSS signals, these will be reported by the monitor.

 

Note:

  • The monitor is listening directly to the RF input and the presence of valid satellites indicated by the monitor does not have any link to the user-configured constellation frequencies that are being recorded. It is your responsibility to check that these are correctly configured. If your antenna does not support L1 GNSS signals, the GNSS monitor will not show satellite tracking information.
  • The GNSS monitor is currently only displaying L1 on the display, however, the unit will output all NMEA data regardless of the monitor screen you are viewing.

 

Notice: System Heat Management for LabSat 4

Labsat 4 is equipped with a high-performance processor that generates heat during operation. To manage this heat, an internal fan is used to extract warm air from the enclosure. Additionally, the aluminium casing will radiate some heat, causing the system to become warm during use.

To ensure optimal performance and prevent overheating, please follow these guidelines:

  • Ventilation: Ensure that the inlet and exhaust vents on Labsat 4 remain unobstructed at all times.
  • Case Exposure: Do not cover the aluminium case of Labsat 4 to allow proper heat dissipation.
  • Operating Conditions: Avoid operating Labsat 4 for extended periods in direct sunlight or in environments where the ambient temperature exceeds 40°C (104°F).

Following these precautions will help maintain a healthy system temperature of Labsat 4.
