06 Connecting VBOX HD Lite to the Vehicle CAN Bus

This page will cover the equipment and information needed to connect VBOX HD Lite to the CAN bus on a vehicle.

VBOX HD Lite has the ability to capture CAN channels from Racelogic modules and/or from a vehicle CAN bus system.

To do this, you must make a hardware connection to the vehicle’s CAN bus system and configure the CAN settings in the Setup software for HD Lite.

HD Lite Hardware connections to Vehicle CAN
  • To connect the HD Lite system to an OBDII port, you must use an RLCAB160 cable.

  • To connect the HD Lite system to a vehicle CAN bus system using a bare wire, you must use an RLCAB164 cable.

Notes:

  • If you are using the RLCAB164, you must make sure that you tape and isolate all unused wires INDIVIDUALLY.

Example: If you only use the red and black wires for power and ground, you must make sure that you tape the remaining 4 wires (2x serial and 2x CAN) individually. Taping them all together will cause a short in the circuit, that can lead to problems for both the VBOX HD Lite and OLED (if you have one connected).

  • If you need to make a connection using a bare wire interface with the CAN Hi and Lo outputs of the vehicle, we strongly recommend contacting a qualified auto-electrician to perform the connection and setup.
